Detailed Information
EDO WONDERLAND Nikko Edomura is a cultural park where visitors can experience the culture and daily life of the Edo period firsthand. Set against the backdrop of Nikko’s rich natural scenery, its expansive grounds feature remarkably realistic recreations of Edo streetscapes, including highways, post towns, merchant districts, a ninja village, and samurai residences. It truly offers the sensation of stepping into the world of a period drama.
Interaction with the People of Edo
Throughout the park, cast members dressed as Edo-period people such as samurai, townspeople, ninjas, and oiran welcome visitors. By chatting with them and experiencing their lives and culture up close, guests can feel as if they themselves are living in an Edo town. Visitors can also transform into Edo people by dressing as kimono-clad townsfolk, warriors, ninjas, and more, making it possible to enjoy a truly immersive “Edo experience.”
A wide variety of participatory programs are also available, such as shamisen experiences, beni makeup experiences, indigo dyeing, and painting, all of which are popular with people of all ages as they learn about traditional culture.
Impressive Plays and Shows
One of the highlights of EDO WONDERLAND is its diverse array of theatrical performances and shows. The park has several theaters, each presenting unique productions. The thrilling ninja show lets visitors experience the world of shinobi through gripping action and dynamic staging. At the elegant and glamorous oiran theater “Wakamatsuya,” guests can enjoy an oiran parade that combines beauty and humor. Meanwhile, “Ryogokuza” presents heartfelt, laughter-filled dramas that invite audiences into the world of Edo entertainment culture.
Exhibition Facilities Where Edo Culture and Craftsmanship Are Learned
In June 2016, a new facility, the Edo Life and Culture Heritage Museum – Modern Edo-tech Museum –, opened. Here, visitors can learn about the skills and spirit of artisans passed down since the Edo period. Through a collection of beautiful and practical everyday items, guests can encounter the “spirit of manufacturing” and “wisdom of living” of the time. The exhibits are arranged in a corridor-style layout, making it easy to experience the “spirit of Edo” and the “inheritance of craftsmanship.”
Dining and Strolling
The park also features many restaurants that recreate Edo-period food culture. For example, visitors can enjoy modern takes on traditional flavors such as soba, dumplings, and sushi. As you stroll through the Edo streetscape, occasional encounters with ninjas and townspeople add to the unique charm of the facility.
Recommended Length of Stay
Because EDO WONDERLAND offers so many sights and activities, it is recommended to spend at least half a day to a full day enjoying the park at a leisurely pace. As you explore the Edo town, various stories and encounters will unfold, allowing you to spend a truly special day. Each visitor can feel like a traveler transcending time, and experience the pulse of Edo firsthand.
EDO WONDERLAND Nikko Edomura is one of Japan’s premier cultural parks, where visitors can fully enjoy the charm of Edo through seeing, touching, and experiencing it all. With its realistic townscapes, powerful performances, master craftsmanship, and delicious food, it offers a rich tapestry of delights that captivates the hearts of all who visit.
