Shoka Sojuku
The private school "Matsushita Village School," established by the thinker Yoshida Shoin during the Bakumatsu period, is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The founder was Shoin's uncle, Tamaki Bunshin, who later passed the school on to Shoin. He emphasized the ideas of reverence for the Emperor and the expulsion of foreigners, along with an education that valued free discussion. Many figures who played pivotal roles in the Meiji Restoration, such as Takasugi Shinsaku, Ito Hirobumi, and Yamagata Aritomo, emerged from this school. The Matsushita Village School still exists within the precincts of Shoin Shrine, where visitors can view its exterior. Why not visit this school that had a significant influence on modern Japanese history and reflect on its remarkable past?
