Hagi Castle Town
Hagi Castle Town is a historic area that developed around Hagi Castle, which was built by Mori Terumoto in 1604. This town retains a strong atmosphere of the Edo period, with white-walled samurai residences, curved streets, and namako walls that convey the scenery of that time. The former residences of notable figures from the late Edo period to the Meiji Restoration, such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Kido Takayoshi, are still preserved, allowing visitors to trace their footsteps. The grid-like layout of the town is dotted with traditional house cafes, souvenir shops, and historical sites, making it enjoyable for leisurely strolls. There are also kimono rental services and guided tours available, providing an experience that feels like stepping back in time to the Edo period. It is also listed as a component of the World Heritage Site “Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.” While visiting Hagi Castle Ruins Shizuki Park, you can observe the moats and stone walls, immersing yourself in the history and culture of the area.
