Tomonoura

Tomo no Ura is a historic town that has flourished as a "port for waiting for the tide" since ancient times, and it is even mentioned in the Manyoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves). Located within Setonaikai National Park, it is known for its beautiful scenery and nostalgic townscape. The port facilities from the Edo period and the charming streets are still preserved, and in 2017, it was designated as an Important Traditional Building Preservation District. It is also famous for being the place where Studio Ghibli's director Hayao Miyazaki conceived the film "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea," and it has served as a filming location for the Hollywood movie "The Wolverine" and the drama "Ryusei Wagon." Take a stroll and feel the atmosphere of ancient times.
