Detailed Information
Aizu Bukeyashiki is a large historical museum park near Higashiyama Onsen in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. Centered around the former residence of Saigo Tanomo, a senior retainer of the Aizu domain, the grounds feature a group of historical buildings relocated and restored from the Edo period. On its approximately 7,000-tsubo site, visitors can experience the lifestyle and culture of Aizu samurai. It is widely loved by many tourists as a place that preserves Aizu bushido and shares its history and culture.
Main Facilities and Highlights
Samurai Residence (Saigo Tanomo Residence)
At the heart of the complex is the restored samurai residence. With an architectural area of about 280 tsubo and 38 rooms, this magnificent wooden Japanese-style building makes extensive use of zelkova, cypress, and cedar. Rooms such as the “Onari-no-Ma,” where the domain lord was received, the senior retainer’s bedroom “Oku-ichi-no-Ma,” as well as the kitchen and bath, have been recreated, allowing visitors to imagine life in that era.
The tragic history of Saigo Tanomo’s wife, Chieko, who committed suicide with her family during the Boshin War, is also reenacted with wax figures, offering a deep lesson in the resolve and way of life of the people of Aizu.
Former Nakahata Jinya
In the center of the grounds stands the “Former Nakahata Jinya,” once used by the Matsudaira family of hatamoto as an official magistrate’s office. This building combines the dignity of shoin-zukuri style with elements of a farmhouse, and as one of the few surviving magistrate jinya, it has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Fukushima Prefecture.
Tea House “Reinan-an Rinkaku”
This tea house was modeled after “Rinkaku,” located within the main enclosure of Tsuruga Castle. In its serene atmosphere, visitors can experience the tea culture of Aizu samurai.
Other Historical Buildings
- Domain Rice Polishing Mill: A facility where rice was polished using a waterwheel.
- Sericulture Farmhouse: A building where visitors can learn about rural life at the time.
- Storehouses and Museum: Exhibits historical materials and daily utensils, conveying what life was like in those days.
Museum and Exhibitions
Aizu Bukeyashiki also includes the “Historical Museum” and the “Aizu Life History Museum,” where visitors can learn in detail about samurai life and the Boshin War. During the winter season (mid-December to early April), the interior of the samurai residence is also open to the public, allowing for a more detailed visit.
Experience Programs
The site is also well equipped with hands-on facilities where visitors can enjoy experiencing Aizu culture.
- Painting experiences for akabeko and okiagari-koboshi dolls
- Glass engraving experience
- Goshashodokoro, where you can dress in period costumes and take commemorative photos
- Kyudo archery experience, with a prize for hitting the target

- Kuyo-tei Restaurant: A place to enjoy Aizu local cuisine.

Visitors can also use only the restaurant or shop without touring the museum. It is an ideal place to look for travel memories and souvenirs.
