Detailed Information
Abukuma Cave, located in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture, is one of Japan’s leading limestone caves and a famous sightseeing spot where visitors can experience up close the breathtaking artistry of nature, shaped over countless ages. The cave stretches approximately 4,218 meters in total, of which about 600 meters are open to the public. Inside, a mysterious and ever-changing landscape unfolds, featuring stalactites hanging dramatically from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the cave floor like bamboo shoots. These formations are said to be among the finest in the East, with an exceptional variety and number, each given its own name to delight visitors. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 15°C throughout the year, making it cool and comfortable to visit even in summer.
Main Highlights
Takine Goten
This is the largest hall in the cave, reaching a maximum height of about 29 meters. Here, visitors can admire many rare formations not seen elsewhere, such as the Crystal Curtain, boxwork, and cave coral. Its three-tiered structure is truly impressive and can be considered Abukuma Cave’s greatest highlight.
World of the Moon
This area was the first in a Japanese limestone cave to introduce a lighting system designed for stage-style effects. It fantastically recreates scenes of sunrise and sunset, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique atmosphere created by the fusion of nature and light.
Other Scenic Spots
Throughout the cave, you will find uniquely shaped stalactites and stalagmites such as “Ryugu-den,” “Juhyo,” “Petrified Forest,” “Christmas Tree,” and “Mushroom Rock.” Observing them after hearing their names makes their forms even more fascinating and easy to appreciate.
Course Options
Standard Course
This standard route takes about 30 minutes and covers the main attractions in the cave. Beautiful lighting creates a dreamlike atmosphere, and it is also popular as a date spot and as a site certified as a “Sacred Place for Lovers.” Along the way, there is a “Bell of Oath” that visitors can ring as a memento.
Adventure Course
This optional course branches off midway through the standard route and offers a thrilling experience as visitors crouch through narrow passages and cross log ladders and stepping stones. It rejoins the standard course at Takine Goten. Since there are many low ceilings and uneven areas, caution is required, but it is recommended for those who want to enjoy a sense of adventure.
Nearby Facilities and Ways to Enjoy
At “Rest House Busan,” located near the cave entrance, visitors can enjoy meals and rest, as well as purchase souvenirs. In addition to local specialties from Tamura City, popular items include red wine stored in the cave, coffee made with natural spring water, and original products such as “wine salt” and “Abukuma lotion.” For dining, favorites include “wine salt ramen” and the limited-quantity “Fuku Unagi Bowl Set,” both offering flavors unique to this location.
Visitor Tips
• The cave maintains a constant temperature of about 15°C year-round. Even in summer, it is a good idea to bring something to wear over your clothes.
• The floor can be slippery, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
• The beautifully illuminated cave is ideal not only for sightseeing, but also for dates and anniversary trips.
