Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Dazaifu Tenmangu is a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and is known as the head shrine among approximately 12,000 Tenmangu shrines nationwide. It is one of the largest shrines in Kyushu. Michizane, who was demoted in 901, died in this area, and a hall was built at his burial site. The shrine grounds feature the beautiful vermilion main shrine, a sacred garden, a treasure hall, and the History Museum of Sugawara no Michizane, adorned with seasonal flowers. In particular, the plum blossoms, which Michizane cherished, are especially noted, with the “Hibai,” located directly in front to the right of the main shrine, being considered a legendary entity.

Dazaifu Tenmangu is widely revered as a deity of scholarship and cultural arts, attracting many worshippers from both Japan and abroad. The grounds are lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, creating a lively atmosphere. Even today, it remains a site of worship for learning, culture, arts, and protection from misfortune, hosting numerous religious ceremonies and events against the backdrop of over 1,100 years of history.

Dazaifu Tenmangu stands as an important sacred site where the reverence for Sugawara no Michizane extends beyond scholars and politicians to a broad audience, continuing to be loved by many as a center of faith in learning, culture, sincerity, and protection from misfortune.
