Detailed Information
Happōdai is an observatory on a hill at the northern tip of the Oga Peninsula in Oga City, Akita Prefecture, and is a breathtaking spot where visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from an elevation of about 180 meters. As its name suggests, it is known as a scenic place from which you can look in all directions, offering sweeping views of the Sea of Japan, Toga Bay, and the rare volcanic crater lakes known as maars, including Ichinomegata and Ninomegata.
The name “Happōdai” was bestowed in 1952 by Prince Takamatsu, who visited the Oga Peninsula that year. It is said that the former Kitaura Town had originally solicited public suggestions for the name of this scenic spot, and the name selected from among them was formally given by the prince.
The observatory features a large wooden deck, and to the west lies Toga Bay, which flourished in the Edo period as a port where sailors waited for favorable winds. To the east are Ichinomegata and Ninomegata, formed when water filled explosion craters, as well as Mt. Kanpū, which symbolizes the Oga Peninsula, and even the Ōu Mountains and the border of Aomori Prefecture in the distance. These volcanic lakes are crater lakes called maars, formed by steam or gas explosions, and are recognized as rare landforms both in Japan and abroad. The Oga Peninsula is also home to Sannomegata, making it a valuable natural heritage site of volcanic terrain.
Happōdai is also popular as one of the best places on the Oga Peninsula to view the sunset. Especially on clear evenings, the scene of the bright red sun slowly sinking into the Sea of Japan captivates visitors. This dreamlike view, along with that of Nyūdōzaki, is widely beloved by locals as a famous sunset spot.
The Edo-period travel writer Sugae Masumi also visited this area and left drawings of the views overlooking Ichinomegata, Ninomegata, and Toga Bay. One of Happōdai’s great charms is that modern visitors can still enjoy almost the same natural scenery from the very same place today.
Access is excellent, as it is located along Prefectural Route 121, and with a large parking lot and restroom facilities, it is an ideal stop during a drive. As it still sees relatively few tourists, it is a recommended hidden gem for those who want to quietly enjoy nature.
Nearby are also facilities related to Namahage, Akita’s important intangible folk cultural asset, such as the Namahage Museum, the Oga Shinzan Folklore Museum, and Shinzan Shrine. Including these in your sightseeing route allows you to experience the nature and culture of Oga more deeply.
