Detailed Information

Kobe’s Nankinmachi is one of Japan’s three major Chinatowns, along with Yokohama Chinatown and Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown. Located in the Motomachi area of Chuo Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, it is also highly accessible, just a short walk from JR and Hanshin Motomachi Station. As a result, this popular destination is bustling with tourists and locals every day. Although the area is relatively compact—approximately 270 meters from east to west and 110 meters from north to south—it is home to around 100 closely packed shops, creating a lively streetscape.

The history of Nankinmachi dates back to the opening of Kobe Port in 1867. The area originated when people, particularly Chinese merchants, began conducting business there. Even today, its exotic scenery reflects this history, making it a valuable place where visitors can experience Chinese culture while still in Japan.

The area’s greatest attraction is undoubtedly its diverse selection of food. Chinese restaurants line the streets, offering authentic dishes such as xiaolongbao, dumplings, steamed pork buns, stir-fried rice noodles, Peking duck, and shark fin cuisine. Nankinmachi is especially known for its street-food culture, and strolling through the area while enjoying dim sum and sweets is a popular pastime. Many shops also sell Chinese tea, seasonings, and miscellaneous goods, making the area an excellent place to shop for souvenirs.

The streetscape is another major attraction of Nankinmachi. The area is marked by splendid Chinese-style gates, including Changan Gate to the east, Xian Gate to the west, and Kaiei Gate to the south. Vermilion-colored buildings and lanterns line the streets throughout the district. At the center of the area, Nankinmachi Square features a Chinese-style pavilion approximately 6.8 meters high, surrounded by stone statues, including the animals of the Chinese zodiac and pandas. The area is enjoyable during the day, while nighttime illuminations create a magical atmosphere.

Nankinmachi also hosts a variety of events throughout the year. The largest is the Spring Festival, which celebrates the Chinese New Year. Traditional Chinese performances, including lion dances, dragon dances, and bian lian, are presented, enveloping the entire district in a festive atmosphere. Other attractions include the “Pochibukuro Lottery” and special limited-time menus, drawing large crowds of visitors. Events such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Lantern Fair are also held, allowing visitors to enjoy distinctive seasonal celebrations.

With its authentic Chinese cuisine, exotic streetscape, and diverse events, Nankinmachi is a captivating tourist destination. Conveniently located near Sannomiya Station, it is one of the places you should definitely visit when sightseeing in Kobe.
