Okazaki Castle
Okazaki Castle is a historic landmark located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, and is especially known as the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu. According to legend, when Ieyasu was born, dark clouds swirled and a golden dragon appeared, which is why the castle is also referred to as "Ryugajo," or "Dragon Castle." The whitewashed main keep, which was rebuilt in 1959, has become a symbol of Okazaki City and is loved by many citizens and tourists alike.
The castle once flourished as a key traffic hub on the Tokaido road, celebrated in the saying, "Even with fifty thousand koku, boats can reach Okazaki." In 2006, its historical significance was recognized, and it was designated as one of the "100 Famous Castles of Japan." In January 2023, it reopened after renovations, featuring digital signage and touch panels that tell the story connecting past and present Okazaki.
This site, developed as Okazaki Park, is also famous for its splendid cherry blossoms in spring. The Cherry Blossom Festival, which includes the Ieyasu Parade and illuminated night cherry blossoms, attracts many visitors. Within the park, you can stroll through the Mikawa Samurai Museum, Ninomaru Noh Theater, and Tatsumi Pavilion, all of which allow you to experience the history and culture of Okazaki.
