Detailed Information
Mikurigaike is a beautiful volcanic lake located on the Murodo plateau in Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture, and is known as one of the most scenic spots representing the Murodo area. Its crystal-clear surface has earned it a reputation as “the most beautiful volcanic lake in the Northern Alps.” Formed about 10,000 years ago by volcanic activity at Mt. Tateyama, it has a circumference of about 630 meters and a depth of about 15 meters. Among the crater lakes scattered around Murodo, it is the largest and deepest, symbolizing the grandeur of the Tateyama mountain range.
From Murodo Terminal, a paved walking path leads to the lake, making it accessible on foot. Mikurigaike is about 500 meters away, or roughly a 10- to 15-minute walk. Along the way, visitors can enjoy alpine plants and marshland scenery, making for a pleasant stroll. As you continue along the path, the vividly blue and clear surface of Mikurigaike comes into view, and its stunning landscape will likely make you pause in admiration.
Because Mikurigaike lies at an elevation of about 2,405 meters, it is usually covered in deep snow until around June each year. During the lingering snow season in spring, the lake may be completely frozen, and even after the summer mountain season begins, ice can remain for a while. From July to October, as the snow melts, the deep blue surface reflects the majestic mountains, including the Tateyama Sanzan, creating a dreamlike scene where the clear sky and mountain scenery are mirrored on the water.
In autumn, the surrounding mountains turn vibrant colors, and the beautiful fall foliage known as the “three-layered autumn colors” of the Tateyama Sanzan is reflected on the lake’s surface. The combination of blue skies, mountain slopes tinted red and yellow, and the lake’s deep blue captivates many visitors with a view so breathtaking it brings a sigh of admiration. The sight of the mountains reflected on the tranquil water is especially beautiful, gently soothing the hearts of those who visit.
The lakeshore is lined with dwarf pine, and the area is also a habitat for the rock ptarmigan, a Special Natural Monument of Japan. If the timing is right, you may even spot one while walking. Nearby, you can also observe wetland plants and alpine flowers such as Iwaichou and Yotsubashiogama, allowing you to enjoy nature throughout the seasons.
On the northwestern shore of Mikurigaike, at an elevation of about 2,430 meters, stands Mikurigaike Onsen. It is known as the highest hot spring inn in Japan and is about a 15-minute walk from Murodo Terminal toward Mikurigaike. Its source springs from the nearby Jigokudani, and the hot spring water flows 100% directly from the source without any added water or reheating. The milky white water carries the scent of sulfur, and the separate men’s and women’s indoor baths with scenic views offer magnificent vistas of Tateyama. It is truly a hot spring above the clouds, perfect for soothing the fatigue of mountain climbing and walking.
There is also a small crater lake called Midorigike on the eastern side of Mikurigaike. With a shallow depth of about 1 to 2 meters, it is so clear that rocks on the lakebed can be seen from the shore. The still surface sharply reflects the Tateyama mountains, and the scenery is especially beautiful during the snowmelt season and autumn foliage season.
Mikurigaike is also deeply connected to Tateyama worship. In the worldview of Tateyama faith, this pond was regarded as “Hakkan Jigoku,” one of the hells of Tateyama. On the other hand, the name “Mikuri” is also written as “Mikuri,” meaning “the kitchen of the gods.” It is said that the water of this pond was used to prepare offerings for Tateyama Gongen, and it has long been cherished as a sacred place.
In this way, Mikurigaike is a special place where the natural beauty created by volcanic activity, spectacular seasonal scenery, rich alpine flora and wildlife such as the rock ptarmigan, and the history and culture of Tateyama worship all come together. Standing on the quiet lakeshore surrounded by magnificent nature, you will be able to fully experience the charm of the Northern Alps.
