Detailed Information
Ushiku Daibutsu is an Amida Nyorai statue located in Ushiku City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Its official name is Ushiku Amida Daibutsu. It can also be seen from around the Ami-Higashi Interchange on the Ken-O Expressway, and its enormous scale is enough to overwhelm first-time visitors.
Standing 120 meters tall in total, including a 100-meter statue and a 20-meter pedestal, it is the world’s largest bronze standing statue and was registered in the Guinness World Records in 1995. Its size is so immense that the Great Buddha of Nara, which is about 15 meters tall, would fit on its palm. It is truly worthy of being called the “world’s greatest bronze Buddha statue.”
🧘♂️ Background and Religious Significance
Ushiku Daibutsu was built by the Jodo Shinshu Higashi Honganji-ha, with Higashi Honganji in Ushiku City, Ibaraki Prefecture, as its head temple. It was inspired by Shinran Shonin (1173–1262), the founder of Jodo Shinshu, who based his missionary work in the Kanto region in what is now Ibaraki Prefecture. Ushiku is a place associated with Shinran, and this enormous Amida Buddha was constructed to pass his teachings on to future generations.
🏗️ Overwhelming Scale
The Daibutsu weighs approximately 4,000 tons in total. The dimensions of its various parts are also astonishing:
• Face length: 20 m
• Left palm: 18 m
• Index finger length: 7 m
• Ear length: 10 m
• Nose height: 1.2 m
• Mouth length: 4 m
The height of 120 meters was determined in reference to the “twelve rays of light” of Amida Nyorai.
🏯 Interior Structure and Highlights on Each Floor
The interior of Ushiku Daibutsu is divided into five floors, each with its own religious and artistic theme.
1st floor: “The World of Light”
This space represents a journey out of darkness covered by earthly desires and into a place where a single ray of light shines through. It symbolizes the compassion of Amida Nyorai, illuminating people’s hearts.
2nd floor: “The Hall of Nenbutsu” and “The World of Gratitude for Blessings”
The Hall of Nenbutsu is used for memorial services, and calligraphy activities are offered during the New Year. The World of Gratitude for Blessings has about 77 sutra-copying seats, where visitors can quietly experience copying Buddhist scriptures for an additional fee (from 500 yen).
3rd floor: “The World of the Lotus Treasury”
A golden world enshrining about 3,400 indoor Buddhist images. Sutra chanting echoes here in the morning and evening, creating a solemn atmosphere.
4th floor: “The Hall of Sacred Vulture Peak”
Buddha’s relics are enshrined here, and panel exhibits introduce the life of Shakyamuni Buddha.
5th floor: Chest Observation Deck (85 m above ground)
From the observation deck located in the chest area on the fifth floor, visitors can take in a panoramic view of the Kanto Plain. On clear days, Tokyo Skytree and Mount Fuji can be seen. It truly offers a breathtaking view that feels like “paradise above the clouds.”
🌸 Jodo Garden and Surrounding Facilities
At the feet of the Daibutsu lies a Jodo Garden inspired by the Pure Land of Paradise. Spanning about 20,000 square meters, the grounds bloom with flowers throughout the seasons: cherry blossoms and moss phlox in spring, peonies, peony roses, and hydrangeas in early summer, and cosmos in autumn. Flower-picking experiences are also available from May.
The park also includes facilities such as:
• A small animal park (with rabbits, goats, and monkey performances)
• Restaurants and a shopping street
• A sutra-copying corner
It is popular as a tourist facility that anyone can enjoy regardless of religion, and it attracts many visitors. In recent years, the number of foreign tourists has also increased; Asian Buddhists offer devout prayers, while Western travelers sense the mystery of the East in its grandeur.
🕯️ Annual Events and Memorial Services
Various events are held at Ushiku Daibutsu throughout the year.
• New Year’s visit and Shusho-e
Held from the night of December 31 through the first three days of the New Year. The site is illuminated and fireworks are launched, and during this period admission to the 3rd floor of the Daibutsu interior is free.
• Manto-e
A memorial service for the deceased, lit by countless lanterns and candles, performed to honor those buried in the cemetery. Members of the public may also take part in the dedication fireworks and lantern procession.
• Eitaikyo Memorial Service (June)
A solemn service conducted in June every year to perpetually honor the indoor Buddhist images enshrined within the statue.
