Detailed Information
Funabashi Andersen Park is one of Japan’s premier leisure destinations, where visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery created by seasonal flowers and a large windmill. Spanning approximately 38.3 hectares, the park is divided into five zones: Wanpaku Kingdom, Fairy Tale Hill, the Children’s Art Museum, Flower Castle, and Nature Experience. Packed with attractions such as open areas where children can play freely in nature, a recreation of Denmark’s pastoral landscape, and an art museum offering hands-on creative activities, it offers all-day enjoyment for three generations of families.
The park’s name comes from H.C. Andersen, the world-renowned fairy tale writer from Odense, Denmark, Funabashi’s sister city.
[Wanpaku Kingdom Zone] An Adventure Area Filled with Nature
Wanpaku Kingdom is a popular area centered on one of Japan’s largest field athletic courses, where both children and adults can enjoy active play.
● Field Athletics
There are four courses—Family, Juemon’s Adventure, Forest of Challenges, and Dynamic—so visitors can choose a level that matches their fitness, from beginner to advanced.
● Juemu Tower / Wanpaku Castle
The area features the multi-play structure “Juemu Tower,” inspired by the Funabashi folktale “Juemon,” as well as the giant play structure “Wanpaku Castle,” which stands about 13 meters tall. The large slide and rope slider are thrilling for children.
● Water Play Area
- Archimedes’ Spring: Features play equipment where children can learn about the mechanics of water, such as a lever-type water pump and a foot-powered water wheel.
- Rainbow Pond: A hugely popular water play spot in summer, where a rainbow may appear on sunny days.
● Interaction with Animals
There is a plaza where visitors can interact with goats, sheep, rabbits, and guinea pigs, offering a soothing experience.
[Fairy Tale Hill Zone] An Area Bathed in the World of Denmark
This atmospheric zone recreates the pastoral landscape of 19th-century Odense, Denmark, and was developed with full cooperation from Odense City.
● Symbolic Windmill
The park’s iconic large windmill rises above the area, creating a photogenic landscape along with seasonal flowers.
● Fairy Tale Hall
A facility that introduces Andersen’s life and Danish culture, featuring a replica of Andersen’s statue and a Little Mermaid statue installed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the sister-city relationship with Odense.
● Community Center
A management building inspired by the Funen Open-Air Museum in Denmark, with a goods shop and exhibition hall. In the front garden is a swan fountain inspired by the fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling.”
[Children’s Art Museum Zone] An Area Where Visitors Can Discover the Joy of Creativity
This hands-on museum, themed around “making” and “playing,” offers creative experiences that families can enjoy together.
● Eight Creative Studios
Visitors can try a wide range of programs, including pottery, dyeing, weaving, printmaking, woodworking, and food-related activities. There are also plenty of regular workshops.
● Andersen Studio
A popular interactive area where visitors can step into a story set from Andersen’s fairy tales and play as one of the characters.
[Flower Castle Zone] A Safe Play Area for Small Children
Located on a hilltop with a pleasant breeze, this hidden gem offers play spaces designed for young children.
● Highlights
- Tokage Net, inspired by the lizard that appears in “Fairy Hill”
- A miniature garden recreating 19th-century Odense
- The “Four Seasons Garden,” blooming with flowers throughout the year
- Nursing rooms and rest areas, making it a safe and comfortable place for families with small children
[Nature Experience Zone] An Area to Connect with Satoyama Nature
Using the existing woodland and wetland, this zone offers nature observation and environmental learning opportunities.
● Wildlife Observation
In waterside areas and walking paths rich with wetland plants, visitors can observe aquatic insects and wetland flora and fauna.
● Rice Fields (Terraced Paddy Fields)
In three rice paddies, hands-on events such as rice planting, rice harvesting, and wildlife observation sessions are held, allowing visitors to experience the workings of satoyama up close.
[Seasonal Flowers and Events] A Park That Changes Its Charm with the Seasons
About 150 varieties and 150,000 plants of flowers are planted throughout the park, allowing visitors to enjoy colorful scenery no matter the season.
● Popular Flowers
- Spring tulips
- “Ice tulips” with a long blooming period
- Cherry blossoms, cosmos, Christmas roses, and more
● Annual Events
- Autumn: Cosmos Festival, Halloween decorations
- Winter: Christmas rose exhibition and direct sales event
- Year-round: creative workshops and nature observation events
