Detailed Information
Kujukuri Beach is one of Japan’s largest sandy beaches, stretching along the Pacific coast of eastern Chiba Prefecture and the Boso Peninsula. A beautiful arc-shaped shoreline extends for approximately 60 to 66 km from Gyobu Cape (Iioka, Asahi City) to Taitozaki (Torami, Ichinomiya Town). True to the name “Kujukuri” (“ninety-nine ri”), its vast sandy expanse offers a magnificent view that seems to go on forever. The entire coastline is designated as part of the Chiba Prefectural Kujukuri Natural Park and has also been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Beaches and one of Japan’s 100 Best Shores.
Its gently sloping waters and relatively calm waves have long been loved by locals. In summer, the beach is busy with swimmers, while throughout the year it attracts surfers and anglers. In winter, many seabirds migrate here, making it a popular spot for birdwatching as well. Because the color and atmosphere of the sea change greatly depending on the season and time of day, it is also an ideal coastline for strolls and drives.
■ Geography, History, and Origin of the Name
Kujukuri Beach is a sandy shoreline that runs from Gyobu Cape to Taitozaki and is known as a long sandy coast with almost no rocky areas. Along the coast, tidal flats and salt marshes are scattered about, creating habitats for diverse wildlife.
● Origin of “Kujukuri”
There is a legend that the name came from measuring the distance by placing arrows at one-ri intervals (about 4 km), continuing as far as ninety-nine ri. The place name Yasashigaura is also said to originate from this story.
● Byobugaura
To the north of Kujukuri Beach, between Gyobu Cape and Choshi City, lies a dramatic cliff stretching about 10 km and rising 35 to 60 m high. It is called the “Dover of the East.” Formed by wave erosion, it is said to have retreated about 6 km over the past 700 years. The former Sanuki Castle, which is said to have existed in the late Heian period and served as the residence of Kataoka Tsuneharu, is believed to have sunk into the sea.
● Iioka Lighthouse
At Gyobu Cape stands Iioka Lighthouse, built in 1956. Its light reaches about 38 km away. It offers a sweeping view of the magnificent seascape of Kujukuri Beach and is one of Japan’s 100 Best Places to View the Sunrise and one of Japan’s 100 Best Places to View the Sunset.

- Summer: Swimming, surfing, and marine sports are at their peak
- Autumn: Strolling and driving in the pleasant breeze are popular
- Winter: Ideal for birdwatching; the clear air makes the sunrise and sunset especially beautiful
