Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle is an important architectural landmark deeply connected to Japan’s history. It started as the predecessor of the Osaka Honganji Temple (Ishiyama Honganji), and has witnessed significant events throughout the tumultuous Sengoku period, including its construction by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, its fall during the Siege of Osaka, its reconstruction by the Tokugawa shogunate, the chaos and destruction during the Meiji Restoration, and subsequent park developments post-World War II. The stone walls, moats, main gate, Tamon turret, and Sengokan turret of Osaka Castle are remnants from the Edo period and have been designated as special historic sites and important cultural properties.

The current main keep, or tenshukaku, was reconstructed in 1931 with donations from citizens. It has over 90 years of history and is recognized as a registered cultural property. This main keep functions as a history museum, showcasing numerous cultural artifacts related to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the history of Osaka Castle. The exhibition halls inside regularly refresh their displays, offering a diverse experience to visitors.

The Osaka Castle tenshukaku is characterized by its beautiful exterior and golden decorations, soaring to a height of 55 meters with five stories and eight levels. From the observation deck on the eighth floor, visitors can enjoy an expansive view of the Osaka cityscape and the magnificent scenery of Osaka Castle under a blue sky. Major renovations were carried out between 1995 and 1997, enhancing the historical and architectural appeal for a broader audience.
