Detailed Information
Kawasaki City Fujiko F. Fujio Museum is a cultural facility that introduces the creative journey and imaginative world of Fujiko F. Fujio (real name: Hiroshi Fujimoto), the artist behind beloved timeless masterpieces such as Doraemon, Perman, Kiteretsu Daihyakka, and New Obake no Q-Taro, with a focus on precious original drawings. Reflecting his deep connection with Kawasaki City, where he lived for many years in Tama Ward and continued drawing manga for children, the museum was conceived from Mrs. Fujiko’s wish to “give back to the children who supported him.” Through the cooperation of Kawasaki City and Fujiko Pro, it opened on September 3, 2011, in Ikuta Ryokuchi Park.
The appeal of Fujiko’s works lies in their warm humor, their depiction of ordinary children’s daily lives, and their unique “SF,” meaning “slightly mysterious” perspective. Guided by the philosophy of passing on to the future the dreams, friendship, courage, hope, great curiosity, and kindness toward others embodied in these works, the museum aims to share that spirit with generations to come.
Inside the museum, Exhibition Rooms I and II display 150 to 200 carefully selected pieces from approximately 50,000 original drawings, allowing visitors to deeply appreciate the charm of the works through hand-colored originals and themed exhibits. In “Sensei’s Room,” his beloved desk and chair, reference materials, and books are arranged to recreate the atmosphere of his creative workspace. The museum also features a manga corner where visitors can freely read the works, as well as “The Room of Animals,” a space filled with animal objects based on paper-cut designs, among many other diverse exhibition areas.
In addition, the museum offers experiential facilities such as the “F Theater,” which screens original short animations exclusive to the museum, a kids’ space for preschool children, and “Minna no Hiroba,” which recreates Nobita’s house at one-fifth scale. On the rooftop, “Harappa,” inspired by the “usual vacant lot,” is a popular photo spot featuring manholes, character monuments, a pond, and other scenery associated with the works.
At the museum café, visitors can enjoy original menu items themed around the works in an open and relaxed setting. The first-floor museum shop and gift corner, “Fujikoya,” offer exclusive merchandise and popular items such as dorayaki.
The facility operates on a fully reservation-based system with date- and time-specific admission, providing a calm environment in which to enjoy the exhibits and spaces. Welcoming many fans from Japan and abroad, the museum is cherished as a new cultural hub in Kawasaki City, sharing the “dreams, kindness, and playfulness” that Fujiko F. Fujio conveyed through his works across generations and beyond national borders.
