Detailed Information
Mount Hakodate is a 334-meter mountain located at the southwestern tip of Hakodate City, Hokkaido, and is one of the city’s most famous sightseeing spots. Its beautiful night view is widely known as one of the “Three Great Night Views of Japan,” and it continues to attract many visitors from Japan and abroad. It was awarded three stars in the famous French guidebook Michelin Green Guide Japan and highly praised as “worth going out of your way to visit.”
An observatory with spectacular views
An observatory is maintained at the summit of Mount Hakodate, offering a grand panorama overlooking Hakodate City, Hakodate Bay, and the Tsugaru Strait. Especially at night, the city lights nestled between the sea sparkle like jewels, creating a beauty that looks as if a jewelry box has been overturned. From summer to autumn, fishing boats for squid create “isaribi” fires on the sea, adding an even more mystical atmosphere.
There is also a romantic legend known as the “Hakodate Night View Heart Legend,” which says that if you find a heart-shaped light in the night view and make a wish, your love will come true. It is a popular spot for couples as well.
A treasure trove of nature
Mount Hakodate was once an island formed by volcanic activity, and about 5,000 years ago, sandbars accumulated and connected it to the main island of Hokkaido (the Kameda Peninsula), turning it into a tombolo. This unique terrain creates the beautiful views of present-day Hakodate City.
The mountain has 12 peaks, and because it resembles a cow lying down, it is also known by the nickname Gagyu-zan, or “Lying Cow Mountain.” From the Meiji period until the end of World War II, it was used as a military fortress, and because access by the general public was restricted for many years, its rich nature was left untouched. In 1964, it was designated a special protected area within a bird and wildlife sanctuary. Today, about 600 species of plants and around 150 species of wild birds have been confirmed here, making it an excellent place for nature observation as well.
Access and transportation
There are several ways to reach the summit of Mount Hakodate.
■ Hakodate Ropeway (most popular)
It takes about 3 minutes from the lower station to the summit station. The large gondola, which has a capacity of 125 people, is cable-free and offers wide views of Hakodate City and the sea through its windows. The facility is barrier-free and designed to be easy for many people to use.
■ Bus, taxi, and private car
Roads to the summit are also well maintained, so access by bus, taxi, or private car is possible. However, during the tourist season and in winter, private car access may be restricted, so it is recommended to check traffic information in advance.
■ Hiking
For those who want to feel close to nature, hiking from the foot of the mountain to the summit observatory is also recommended. The representative “Former Mountain Trail Tsutsujiyama Course” starts from the Hakodateyama Fureai Center (6-12 Aoyagicho, Hakodate City) and takes about one hour to reach the summit. Walking along the well-maintained trail surrounded by seasonal nature offers a different kind of charm from ordinary sightseeing.
Nearby facilities and ways to enjoy the area
Around the observatory, there are souvenir shops and restaurants where visitors can enjoy meals and shopping. During the day, you can take in the townscape of the port city of Hakodate, and on clear days, you may even be able to see Aomori Prefecture across the Tsugaru Strait. From fresh spring greenery to lush summer foliage, autumn leaves, and winter’s snowy landscape, the mountain offers different charms in every season, giving visitors a new sense of wonder each time they come.
Points to note and recommendations for visiting
When visiting Mount Hakodate, it is important to check the weather and transportation options. Especially if your main purpose is to see the night view, visibility may be blocked by fog or clouds, so checking the forecast is essential. If you plan to hike, it is reassuring to wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing. In summer, insect repellent is recommended; in winter, warm clothing and slip-resistant shoes are necessary.
Mount Hakodate is an essential sightseeing destination in Hakodate, combining a world-renowned night view, rich nature, and historical significance. While it is easily accessible by ropeway, visitors can also enjoy activities such as hiking, making it beloved by people of all ages. Be sure to choose a day with good weather and spend a memorable time enjoying its inspiring views.
