Detailed Information
Ikebukuro Sunshine City is one of Japan’s first large-scale urban redevelopment complexes, opened in 1978 and located in Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima Ward, Tokyo. Built around the concept of a “city within a city,” this complex brings together shopping facilities, hotels, cultural facilities, offices, and more, and welcomes approximately 30 million visitors annually, making it a landmark representative of the Ikebukuro area.
The complex also has historical significance, as it was built on the site of the former Sugamo Prison (formerly the Sugamo Detention Center), which was used by the Allied Forces after World War II.
Structure and Main Facilities
Sunshine City consists of the following five main buildings and areas:
- Sunshine 60 Building (a supertall office building)
- Sunshine City Prince Hotel (accommodation)
- World Import Mart Building
- Cultural Hall Building
- Shopping Street Alpa
These buildings are interconnected, allowing visitors to move comfortably indoors regardless of the weather.
Entertainment Facilities
Sunshine City offers a wide variety of entertainment facilities for both children and adults.
Sunshine Aquarium
Located on the rooftop, this popular attraction is known as an “oasis in the sky” floating above the city. It has gained attention for unique exhibits such as “Sky Penguins,” where penguins appear to swim as if flying through the sky.
Konica Minolta Planetarium “Manten” in Sunshine City
Enjoy a relaxing planetarium experience that combines the latest visual technology with scent and sound effects. It is also ideal for adults looking to unwind.
Sunshine 60 Observatory Tenbou Park
This observatory offers spectacular views of Tokyo from a height of about 251 meters. Renovated in 2023 from the former “SKY CIRCUS Sunshine 60 Observatory,” it also features seasonal events and a café space, making it a popular date spot.
NAMJATOWN
This indoor theme park offers games, mystery-solving experiences, and collaboration events with anime works. At “Gyoza Stadium,” visitors can sample specialty dumplings from all over Japan, making it a great destination for food lovers as well. It is operated by Bandai Namco Amusement.
Shopping and Gourmet Area
Shopping Street Alpa is a shopping zone that spans from the basement first floor to the third floor above ground, with around 150 stores. It features a wide range of shops, including fashion, accessories, and cosmetics, and is also known as a hub for youth culture and trends.
On the second floor, there are many character shops that can be enjoyed by both children and adults, including:
- Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo
- Pikachu Sweets by Pokémon Cafe
- Donguri Republic (Studio Ghibli-related goods)
The dining options are also extensive, with cafés, restaurants, specialty dessert shops, and many food areas featuring unique and famous eateries. In particular, “Gyoza Stadium” inside NAMJATOWN is a rare gourmet spot where you can enjoy regional gyoza from across Japan all at once.
Events and Access
At Fountain Square in the center of Sunshine City, a variety of events are held throughout the year, including live performances, character shows, and exhibitions, so there is always something new to enjoy each time you visit.
In addition, the first floor of the Cultural Hall Building houses the Sunshine City Bus Terminal, where airport limousine buses and highway buses to various destinations depart and arrive. With excellent access to regional cities and airports, it is also a convenient base for travel and business trips.
The adjacent Sunshine City Prince Hotel is a popular accommodation choice for both sightseeing and business, with excellent access to nearby attractions.
Ikebukuro Sunshine City is truly a “multifunctional urban complex,” bringing together shopping, gourmet dining, entertainment, culture, lodging, and transportation in one place. Packed with attractions for all ages, it has long been beloved by many people as the face of Ikebukuro’s east exit. With new discoveries to be made on every visit, it is a comprehensive facility that can also be recommended as a base for sightseeing in Tokyo.
